The opening day of the ICC World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand saw rain god stealing the spotlight throughout the whole day as the match officials had to abandon the first day’s play.
Earlier, the ICC kept June 23 as a reserve day. The weather forecast suggested that Day 2 is expected to receive the least amount of rainfall. As per the forecast, the second day was cloudy.
The toss was delayed on the first day. However today, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl first at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. Team India opening pair Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got off to a pretty decent start.
There was a huge movement early on in the innings, courtesy of Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Both the experienced pacers tried their best to keep the opening pair in check. However, they ensured to stick to the basics and played a fine style of cricket in the first 10 overs.
Rohit and Gill constructed a 62-run stand before the former departed after the making 34. Rohit looked in fantastic touch with the bat but unfortunately got out at the wrong time. His innings included as many as 6 fours.
Kyle Jamieson dismissed him in the first ball of the 21st over. After Rohit’s departure, Neil Wagner was brought into the attack and the decision paid off as the southpaw dismissed Shubman Gill in the third ball of the 25th over.
Virat Kohli hits a classy cover drive
India lost two wickets before lunch situation. Now, India’s Test specialist batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and Indian captain Virat Kohli are on strike. Pujara is yet to get off the mark as he played 24 deliveries.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli got off to a superb start in the form of a cover drive. Kohli played three dot balls before hitting a scintillating cover drive off Neil Wagner’s bowling. Australian journalist Chloe-Amanda Bailey reacted to the shot on Twitter.
