Karnataka Covid lockdown news live: DGP appeals to people to take lockdown seriously
The vaccination drive in Karnataka for those over 45 years has hit a roadblock with the state reporting a severe shortage of doses. It has already deferred the drive to be rolled out on May 1 for those between 18 and 44 years as it’s yet to receive Covishield doses from Serum Institute of India (SII). With 3.2 lakh active cases in Karnataka, estimates by the state government indicate that nearly 56,000 patients may require oxygenated beds and 10,000 would need ICUs, going by ‘past experience’. The second wave of Covid-19 has delivered a shocker, with around 30% of those who died due to Covid had no comorbidities. In other words, people with healthy lifestyle have succumbed to the virus. An entire village, home to more than 1,500 people, in Mandya district was declared a containment zone and locked down as Covid-19 cases, possibly from an influx of returnees, showed an uptick in rural areas as well. The wait for conducting the last rites at Panathur Crematorium stretched to 10-12 hours on Thursday, said volunteers assisting anguished families of Covid-19 patients. Stay with TOI for all updates.
