For the first time in many weeks, new Covid cases dipped below 2,000 in a day, while deaths declined to 56 across Karnataka, according to the health bulletin on Sunday. As epicentre of the pandemic in the state, Bengaluru, however, reported only 433 fresh cases on Saturday, taking its Covid tally to 12,19,378, including 13,459 active cases, while recoveries increased to 11,90,182, with 203 patients discharged in the last 24 hours. With 56 patients, including 8 in Bengaluru succumbed to the infection, taking the state’s death toll to 35,835 and the city’s toll to 15,736 since the pandemic broke out in mid-March a year ago. Mucormycosis, seen as post-Covid infection, has claimed 303 lives in Karnataka so far and 104 of them are from Bengaluru. All the dead had survived Covid-19, but succumbed to the fungal infection. A total of 3,491 patients have been diagnosed with mucormycosis in the state as on July 9, and the fatality rate is 8.6%. Bengaluru Urban district has seen 1,109 cases, followed by Dharwad 279, Vijayapura 208 and Kalaburagi 196. While Bengaluru reported the highest number of deaths, Kalaburagi saw 23 deaths and Dakshina Kannada 20. In other news, the state government is empowered to decide the fee structure of CBSE schools, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is believed to have communicated to the commissioner of public instruction, Karnataka.
