GOODELLS – When it closed in September, there were some people who thought Club 21 would never reopen, Port Huron resident Dave Rix said.
But for the last couple months he has been working on the restaurant at 8385 Lapeer Road to hopefully do just that.
“I just feel like the place had a lot of potential,” he said.
Rix, who was general manager of Rix’s Rooftop in Port Huron before it closed last year, said he is still working out the details of the restaurant like a menu and opening date, as he doesn’t know when the government will allow restaurants to reopen.
He said a lot of people know about the restaurant and have been getting nachos and burgers there for years. There are no restaurants near it for miles and it’s a good opportunity with the Goodells fairgrounds nearby and different events and weddings in the area.
“I feel like it’s a destination spot in the country a lot of people recognize,” he said.
Jerry Storey of Port Huron, who died in 2013, was the owner of Club 21 in Goodells for 26 years, according to his obituary.
Rix said he started to manage Club 21’s operations a few months prior to closing.
He said it closed due to unforeseen circumstances regarding general financal obligations, but declined to go into more detail.
Rix said locals are excited to see work done on the building and he wants to keep the restaurant the same saloon style it had before, a “country look,” to stay true to the surrounding area and community.
“It will always be Club 21,” he said.
